This week, Katie and Joe feature music from Brittany, one of the seven, traditionally Celtic nations. Located on the western coast of France, Brittany boasts its own language and culture, along with a deep musical tradition. Breton music features modes, rhythms, and motifs more varied than a listener might expect from Irish or Scottish music, with the music at times sounding distinctly medieval or Middle Eastern. Coupled with influences from Irish music and American Jazz, Breton music is a rich tapestry of sonic pleasures that we are excited to bring you this hour. And for you ethnomusicology buffs out there, we’re breaking folks in gently; we’re not featuring kan ha diskan singing or couple de sonneurs (in _this_ hour), but you will get your fill of bagpipes and bombardes!
