This week, Katie and Joe hone in on the Irish Wooden Flute. It was going to be a show about accordions and concertinas this week, but Katie lost the coin toss. We stil include a few accordion/flute duos to make up for it. The wooden flute in Irish traditional music emerged as an instrument in the mid-1800’s when Boehm developed a radical system to fix all the tuning and scale issues inherent with the existing baroque flute. Players in Europe flocked to this newer, more accurate, silver flute, and they unloaded their old wodden flutes. Irish players snapped up these wooden flutes at bargain-basement prices and developed a playing style that lent a unique sound to Irish music. Modern-day wooden flutes from a skilled maker often surpass the price and sonic quality of a silver flute, and in the hands of a skilled player, a wooden flute is truly magical.
