Samhain is the Celtic holiday that has morphed into the Westernized concept of Hallowe’en. It’s a time when the veil between the spirit world and the real world grows thin–thin enough that spirits and humans may pass back and forth between their realms. This week, we’ve picked out some music that acknowledges that gossamer drape between worlds. Sometimes the spirit worlds manifests itself through insanity, other times terrifying apparitions. The central figures in the songs and tunes find enlightenment and knowledge or even profound sadness and death. This week, we feature Liz Carroll, Malinky, Shannon, Jennifer & Hazel Wrigley, Christy Moore, The Voice Squad, The John Renbourne Group, Martin Carthy, Cillian Vallely, Florence Fahy, and Dervish.
