Show 088 – Anything But Jigs And Reels (2019-11-23)

posted in: Past Shows

Traditional Irish and Scottish music tends to be heavy on the jigs and reels, since these rhythms are easy to play and fit many different dances. In this episode, Katie and Joe explore other rhythms and dances that deserve our full attention. We play Hop Jigs, Slip Jigs, Slides, Muñeires, Xotas, Polkas, Strathspeys, Airs, Waltzes, Hornpipes, Barndances, a march, and a twisty tune in 7/8 time. It turns out there are so many other tune types that we’ll have to feature others in future shows. There are simple mnemonics you can use to determine the rhythm of a tune. Just repeat the words, and if they fit, it’s probably a:
Reel (4/4) = “Watermelon”
Double Jig (6/8) = “Canteloupe Honeydew”
Slip Jig (9/8) = “Apricot Canteloupe Honeydew”
Slide (12/8) = “Broccoli-Broccoli-Broccoli-Broccoli”
Hornpipe (2/4) = “Juicy Mango” + “Big Bump Up”
Barndance (4/4) = “Juicy Mango” (no “Big Bump Up”)
Polka (2/4) = “Bacon”
Waltz (3/4) = “Cucumber”
Mazurka (3/4) = “Shoe the Donkey”This show features tracks from Johnny Óg Connolly; Liz Carroll; Catherine McEvoy, Caoimhin O Raghallaigh & Michael O Raghallaigh; Corquiéu; Susana Seivane; Planxty; Liam O’flynn; Eithne Ní Uallacháin; Martin Quinn & Angelina Carberry; The Friel Sisters; Ann Gray; Paddy Glackin & Robbie Hannan; Danú; Malcolm Dalglish & Grey Larsen; and Mànran.
