Show 095 – Burns’ Night (2020-01-18)

posted in: Past Shows

January 25th marks the birthday of one of the greatest songwriters and poets in western literature: Robert Burns. Celebrated on Burns’ Night wherever folks of Scottish heritage gather, the evening is marked with feasting on haggis and single malt whisky while enjoying perfomances of Robert Burn’s poetry and songs. Born in 1725, Robert Burns witnessed great upheavals in France and America, which graced him with a strong kinship with the struggles of the common man to find equality and justice, and his words reflect that. He believed in writing in Scots dialect, which sometimes proves difficult for a listener unaccustomed to the sound, but it lends a beautiful, lyrical quality to song lyrics and poems alike. In honor of Burns’ Night, Katie and Joe play songs written by Robert Burns, with some non-Burnsian tracks tossed in to balance things out. We left out the well-known songs such as Auld Lang Syne and My Luve Is Like a Red Red Rose, but we wrap up with what Joe considers Burns’ masterpiece: A Man’s A Man.This week, we play Ed Miller, Beth Patterson, Fiddlers2, Sileas, Dick Gaughan, The Fire, Dervish, Fortunate Strangers, Silly Wizard, Malinky, Mànran, and Ryan Joseph Burns. Our FairPlé score this week: 50
