This week, Katie Marie and Joe skim the deep waters of Irish regional fiddle styles. Worthy of years of advanced academic study, describing a fiddle style that defines the music of each part of Ireland is difficult. Some scholars claim that isolation and lack of travel caused fiddle players in various parts of Ireland to develop distinct sounds. Others counter that mobility was always there, and traveling musicians would bring their musical styles across Ireland. So, in this show, we play examples of the commonly-known fiddle styles, without knowing if the regional sound defined the musicians or did the musicians define the sound with their unique playing?
