It’s that time of year that trad musicians both love and hate: Saint Patrick’s Day! It’s a time to celebrate the beauty and energy of Irish songs and tunes, yet the holiday has the reputation of alcoholic overindulgence, and maudlin sentimentality. It’s also the time of year when trad musicians on this side of the Atlantic earn the equivalent of a year in the space of a week.
