Last week, Katie and Joe flipped a coin to see whether we’d feature a show about the Irish flute or the accordion. Flutes won, so this week, we are pleased to present an hour of hard-driving music featuring the accordion and the concertina. These instruments are “Free Reed” which means that the reeds inside are not encumbered by a mouthpiece or clamp and are free to vibrate as air passes over them, much like a harmonica. Although much-maligned and the butt of many jokes, in the hands of masters like these, accordions are a sheer delight.
This week, Katie and Joe play tracks from: Caroline Keane, David Munnelly & Jonas Fromseier, Bumblebees, Mary Macnamara, Beth Patterson & Patrick O’Flaherty, Sharon Shannon, Tim Edey, Liz Carroll & Tommy Maguire, Nuala Kennedy, Silly Wizard, Danu´, Caitlín & Ciarán, Bridgetown, 3’oh, Jackie Daly, and Noel Hill & Tony MacMahon
