[This episode originally aired on 4/23/21] This week, Katie Marie and Joe play an hour of trad music where the guitar, bouzouki, or bodhrán play a crucial role in establishing the rhythm, mood, and drive of a tune or song. Although the concept of guitar accompaniment in traditional Celtic music is relatively recent over the past few decades, Irish céilí bands have been using drum kits and pianos for a long time to help lift the dancers’ feet. The guitar and bouzouki have become widely accepted, although there are pockets of resistance that object to their presence as diluting the traditional, “pure drop” sound that focuses strictly on collaborative melody.
