Show 302 – Anything but Jigs and Reels
(2024-01-06)

posted in: Past Shows

This week, Katie Marie and Joe start exploring tunes outside the boundaries of the usual jig and reel rhythms common in traditional Celtic music. Reels are a driving 4/4 rhythm, mimicked by saying “Watermelon”, and you can match the rhythm of the standard double jig, in 6/8 time, as “apricot honeydew.” We aren’t playing any of those tunes this week–we’ll be exploring the rest of the fruit basket of Celtic music.

The artists this week: Kozo Toyota & Keisuke Kubo; The Monks of the Screw; Emma O’Leary; Marie & Martin Reilly; James Noonan, Michael Shorrock, Chris McGrath & Ted Davis; The Fire; Brid O’Gorman with Eoin O’Neill; Niamh Ní Charra; Gay Mckeon; John Doyle-Liz Carroll; Zonk; The Friel Sisters; Patrick Molard; and Imar.

Our FairPlé score this week: 50
